Sekigahara-juku

Sekigahara-juku has always been a main and flourishing traffic point, facing the perilous Imasu Pass, Hokkoku-kaido, and Ise-kaido. There is no honjin left, but the gate of the waki honjin remains as it was.
◆From Sekigahara-juku to Imasu-juku
In this portion of the course, the Nakasendo passes through places from the Jinshin War and the Battle of Sekigahara, which played an important role in the history of Japan. There are remains such as “Fuwanoseki ruin (one of the three ancient barriers)”, “Wakamiya-hachiman-gu Shrine (at which Prince Otomo, who was beaten in the Jinshin War, is enshrined)” and “Tokiwagozen’s grave (Yoshitsune Minamoto’s mother.)” Imasu Pass, which used to be the most dangerous, is even now a traffic chokepoint in winter because it is very steep.
